“Dirty Laundry” was my project Greenlight Submission for this year. I wrote it and quickly put the cast together and shot it on the iPhone 5! The story is inspired by many true events from the lives of people that I know. I wanted to capture two characters who had different expectations of their situation. Ann is hoping for love and Chase is looking for a quick thrill. The hamper in the story is a foreshadowing device. It’s like those moments in life, where you think they might not mean anything, such as small talk, but if you look deeper into the situation there is a hidden meaning. In this instance, the hidden meaning was quite literal, meaning Chase had dirty laundry (some kind of baggage that he is not revealing).
I was really surprised at how well the reverse shots worked in this piece. I wanted Ann to relive all those moments in her head and her choice she made to engage with him even though she knew he had a fiancee. At the end I crossed faded back to her in the laundry room airing his shirt out, hence airing the dirty laundry again. The symbolism of the washing is a sign of repeating the process. I really like the takeaway of this short cause it shows women to think twice about their actions before letting things get too crazy to handle. What they may see as fun in the moment may not really be fun in the long term.
